From the keyboard of the Newsletter Editor

2010 February 7
by Teresa Hernandez

My favorite part of the creative process is seeing the results of great ideas take form. This is also why I like computer programing, you have the chance to see your work in action almost instantly. Being the Newsletter Editor for SWE UPRM has given me the opportunity to express my creativity and I’m proud to say our Newsletters are nothing like the ones  you see around UPRM.

I’ve had an idea for a newsletter layout inspired by Google since last semester but the truth is I had absolutely no idea how I was going to do it. It took a LOT of help from our Webmaster, Manuel Maldonado to see the final product, which also means I learned a lot during the creation of this newsletter. This newsletter, along with past ones, will be available this week on our website http://swe.uprm.edu

New Semester, New Beginnings

2010 February 2
by Teresa Hernandez

We have started a new semester and with it, a lot of stuff going on with our SWE UPRM chapter. Our Executive Board will be going through some changes and with them new leadership opportunities will arise for all our SWE Members.

We are pleased to announce our President, Alba Burgos and our Treasurer, Lourdemar Torres will be participating this semester in a COOP Experience here in Puerto Rico. Because of this great opportunity, which also requires them to be outside UPRM for the whole semester, they resigned from their positions to let others have the same leadership experience they had within SWE at UPRM. Our Vice-President, Heizel Rosado will be working with us as our new President FY10 and FY11.

We also have other Executive Board members who are about to graduate and have a heavy academic workload this semester, so they decided to step down from their positions and let other members have the opportunity to be great leaders. The positions we have available are:

  • Vice-President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • VP Charity
  • Student Activities Leader
  • INQU Representative

More information will be distributed to our members on our next General Assembly next Thursday, February 4 at II202, 10:30AM.

If you’re a SWE Member eager to let your leadership skills flourish and thrive in extracurricular activities (this is a great way to appeal your future bosses!), then this is YOUR opportunity, don’t let it get away!

My experience at SWE National Conference 2009

2009 November 14
by Maricarmen Collet

at Long Beach Hey there! My name is Maricarmen Collet and I’m the Public Relations Manager for SWE-UPRM. My purpose for writing this entry is to let all of you know about the amazing time we had this year at  SWE Conference in Long Beach,CA. On October 14-18 more than 6,000 women in engineering and technology gathered in this place to give their careers a boost. There were a lot of workshops on themes like professional development (résumé writing, how to work a career fair, preparing for a job interview, careers in academia…), outreach events (how to encourage young girls to pursue a career in engineering), inclusion and cultural awareness, how to be a green engineer and many others. There were also technical tours to plants from companies like Boeing, Raytheon and ExxonMobil. Not to mention the career fair was huge! There were many companies you don’t get the chance to see in  the UPRM Career Fair: Facebook, Dell, Nestle, Hallmark, John Deere, Intel, Fluor and many  others.  One of our members, Sara Rivera (ChemE), got a job offer for this summer. Congrats, Sara! We’re so happy for you.  And of course, not everything is about professional development. While in Long Beach we got the chance to do sightseeing!!! This was one of my favorite parts since it was my first time traveling out of P.R. We had an awesome time exploring the harbor area, riding on a ferris wheel, and taking the metro to Hollywood! Well, the metro was the randomest moment ever. Everyone was staring at us because we were so loud and speaking in Spanish, lol.  In Hollywood we got the chance to shop for souvenirs, see the stars in the Walk of Fame, take pictures with wax figures in Madame Tussauds, and we almost got knocked down by a crowd of zombies (it was a theater promotion for Zombieland).  Overall, this trip was a great experience. It was full of many opportunities to grow as a professional and to further your social network.  For this reason I encourage all of you to take part in SWE Conferences…both National and Regional.  You will not regret it.

Next conference is just a few months away. Stay in touch and next semester we will give you all the details.

Mindbreaker Challenge-Outreach

2009 November 12
by lulyoutreach

Hey Again! Outreach Committee here! What’s new? Well our next event is our mysterious Mindbreaker Challenge. What is it? We have a group of students from middle-school visiting our campus and we have this challenge set up for them, but we’ll let you in the secret since we’re still looking for volunteers.

The event will be held on November 25, 2009. In the morning, we’ll give them a small presentation on what’s engineering and its different fields. SO LISTEN UP MY FELLOW STUDENT ENGINEERS, we’re looking for volunteers from every field to give them a brief yet understandable talk about the profession your studying. I’m talking Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Civil, Computer and Industrial Engineers. Be Proud of It! :) Afterwards we will set up teams from these students and put them up to the challenge!! See which teams put their creativity to work !!

MINDBREAKER CHALLENGE——> Which team can build a  Book Support that can hold the biggest amount of weight?? With the right set of materials, sounds fairly easy right? Now the catch is, they will have to build it with only glue, matches and paper. Of course they’ll need certain HINTS from us, so if you think you can help out with this, contact our committee!

SWE Needs you! We’re in dear need of volunteers to make this activity a success!! I know that both members and the students attending this activity will have lots of fun! Help inspire our next generation! Contact lourdes.davila@upr.edu if you have any questions or if you want to volunteer. Leave comments and tell me what you think of the event!

Outreach Committee? Never heard of it?

2009 November 11
by lulyoutreach

Our Outreach Committee seeks to increase the student interest in the engineering field, specially in women. Why join it? You get to work hands-on with students from elementary, middle and high school through a series of fun and creative activities that promote our beloved engineering fields.  Sometimes students do not get the adequate information as to what’s out there and the opportunities you can get, so the best approach is to show them the variety of things you can do in this specific profession. The Outreach Committee from the UPRM section has done activities like the “Engineering Walk of Fame”, where four different schools attended this event and visited each engineering department around our campus and got an insight on what each engineering field does. We do other events like our famous “Shadow Day”, where students shadow our SWE members and take their classes throughout the day.

SWE needs you! It’s always interesting to make activities that challenge and show students their potential to be an engineer. So join us now! And be part of our next generation’s inspiration to become engineers :) Stay tuned for our upcoming activities and I can’t wait to listen to your suggestions and innovative ideas for our next events. If you’re still not convinced or if you have questions related to outreach please contact lourdes.davila@upr.edu . Hope to hear from you soon!

Trust Me… I’m an engineer T-shirts

2009 October 27
by Teresa Hernandez

TrustMe T-shirt SWE in UPRM is recognized by our popular “Trust Me… I’m an engineer” T-shirts. They were originally created almost two years ago as part of our  E-week Celebration. They turned out to be a great success among the students and you can still see them wearing the T-shirts all throughout campus any given day. The following year we decided that the T-shirts needed a make-over, thus the new shirts (the ones you see here) were born. These also had a great impact both here at UPRM and at the Regional Conference of April 2009 at Atlanta where we sold them as fundraisers. You can still get yours here! Just contact us or come by our office S-118 and you can join the sensation that’s sweeping the section.
